Birthday getaway in Tossa de Mar: sun-kissed memories
Turning 34 never felt this good. For my birthday weekend, we escaped just an hour down the coast from Perpignan to the stunning Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava. The drive alone feels like a mini-adventure, trading vineyards and hills for dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and the fresh, salty sea breeze.
We stayed at Elizabeth by the Sea, a charming boutique hotel just steps from the beach. Minimalist, bright, and utterly Instagram-worthy, the place feels effortlessly luxurious without trying too hard. Floor-to-ceiling windows meant we woke up to the glint of the Mediterranean every morning, and the balcony? Perfect for late-night cava and casual people-watching. Honestly, it’s the kind of hotel that makes you want to cancel your plans just to stay in and stare at the horizon.
Costa Brava lives up to its name — the “wild coast” isn’t just a romantic notion. Tiny sandy beaches are tucked between jagged cliffs, each one feeling like your own private slice of paradise. Platja Gran, right below the Vila Vella, is iconic, but my favorite were the smaller, quieter coves you have to scramble down to reach — rewardingly secluded, sun-drenched, and perfect for a little birthday reflection.
Tossa de Mar’s iconic remparts – medieval walls guarding stories of the past.
Tossa de Mar’s remparts rise dramatically above the turquoise waters, a reminder of the town’s medieval past. Walking along these ancient stone walls, you can almost hear the whispers of history, while the sparkling sea and rugged cliffs create a postcard-perfect view at every turn.
Tossa’s old town, Vila Vella, is a storybook walled village clinging to a cliffside. Walking through the remparts — the ancient stone ramparts — you can almost hear echoes of history: pirates, fishermen, and medieval merchants all once navigating these same streets. The fortress feels cinematic, the kind of place you half-expect a swashbuckler to appear around the corner. And those views! Jagged cliffs, sparkling coves, and beaches that look so perfect they almost shouldn’t exist.
No birthday weekend is complete without indulgence, and Tossa’s culinary scene doesn’t disappoint. We feasted on paella brimming with fresh seafood — prawns, mussels, and the kind of squid that tastes like it came straight from the ocean that morning. Tapas bars line the promenade, each offering something tempting: grilled sardines, bombas (fried potato and meat balls), and chilled glasses of Albariño that paired perfectly with the salty breeze. One evening we stumbled into a small family-run restaurant tucked into a side street; by the end of the night, we were laughing with the owners over glasses of cava, already planning our next visit.
By the end of the weekend, I felt recharged, sun-kissed, and thoroughly spoiled — exactly how a 34th birthday should feel. Tossa de Mar is one of those rare places where history, natural beauty, and modern charm collide, making it not just a trip, but a full-on experience you’ll be dreaming about long after you leave.
We always celebrate my birthday in Spain — just a short drive from home in France, yet it somehow feels like a proper escape abroad.
